Notes on the Artwork: A diptych acrylic painting of two black swans in flight about to pass over a lake, alongside and below sit two swans bathing in the water. The scenes echo each other—above and below—holding a quiet connection between movement and stillness, reflection and possibility. Before and after.
This piece comes from thinking about the future as something full of wonder, but also uncertainty. There is always more to discover—about ourselves, about others, and about the world around us. Adventure is there if we choose it, but it doesn’t come without risk.
The idea of unknown unknowns—the things we can’t yet predict or fully understand—sits at the centre of the work. Reflecting on how we move towards these spaces, and how painful it can be to let go of what feels safe and familiar. The tension between stepping forward and the fear of getting it wrong. Falling is part of learning, but that doesn’t make it easier to try again.
The black swans act as quiet markers of these moments—symbols of the unexpected, and of connection between where we are and where we might be going. This work explores that space between holding on and letting go, accepting that growth often comes through uncertainty, and that what we cannot yet see may shape our best future.
