Notes on the Artwork: "Flowers have long been used as a metaphor for femininity, representing characteristics such as youth, fragility and perfection alongside associations with nurturing and growth. We give flowers as gifts to women and in various cultures flowers are associated with goddesses and female deities. Traditionally, artists portray lush, full-blown flowers at the peak of their bloom. Reclaiming Eden seeks to redefine and recontextualise this traditional narrative and to re-evaluate the traditional symbolism of flowers.
The series deliberately spotlights specimens past their full bloom to communicate their strength and resilience. With drooping heads and dried-out petals, these images are a reaction against homogenous, mainstream ideals of beauty and instead champion the allure of faded elegance, subtle imperfections and natural decay.
By using the cyanotype process, Reclaiming Eden also pays homage to Anna Atkins and her pioneering work with botanical cyanotypes in the first half of the nineteenth century. The addition of Yorkshire Tea here is my own homage to my mother who, like myself and generations before her, was born and raised in the North of England."
