Notes on the Artwork: '“Proper Treats” takes its title from a snippet of family life—my children protesting my offerings of prunes and breadsticks with the lament, “All our friends get proper treats!” That phrase stuck with me, loaded with the humour, frustration, and earnestness of childhood. The portrait is loosely based on my son, but the painting evolved into something more surreal as I found myself meditating on the randomness of childhood experience and my anxieties about climate change. The painting —a child adrift in a boat, crowned with a bird hat and floating clouds—blends whimsy and unease, suggesting both imaginative play and the weight of an uncertain future.'
