Notes on the Artwork: 'Lost Specimens is an in-depth reflection on human’s pervasive influence on the Earth, and how our systems of information and communication have been disrupted: Objectification of the environment is a highly problematic symptom of how we, as a society, interacts the natural world. Notions of truth, reality and the stories/lies we tell ourselves is a highly problematic symptom of how we, as a culture, interact with ourselves.
Coined vegan taxidermy, I use forest detritus to create carefully staged beasts, complete with a common name, Latin name and year “discovered”, plus a scientific description detailing their habitat, ecology, evolution, reproduction and lifespan, accessed via brass engraved QR codes, an interactive portal into their extraordinary worlds.
Ubiquitous Bob, a marine anaerobic photoautotroph, is found around deep water hot-springs across the world, and uses light-harvesting antenna to capture electromagnetic waves, crystals of concentrated energy emitted from submarine cables (carrying high-voltage electrical currents and cyber communication networks) which it metabolizes as a food source. Part-matter, part-photon, C. quanta have evolved into a fully-fledged quantum entity, exhibiting entanglement between the bacteria it is made from, and electromagnetic quasi-particles via strong coupling with light, allowing it, in its animated state, to be considered as a large cloud of probabilities over a whole range of all possible networks.'
